"I started Girl Up Janaki because i realised how privileged most of us are. There are so many girls that live in developing countries that don't get opportunities like education, financial independance, awareness about importance of health, etc.
I realised that as a team, we can help so many girls in India. I am excited to put together a group of passionate feminists (boys and girls) to help underprivileged adolescent girls. I chose the name Janaki because it means 'of the earth' and it is meant to help girls at the grass root level.
We plan to start small and gradually scale-up. Some of the initiatives being discussed in the group revolve around: holding bake sales during Open Days at school and community events at our residential societies, educating women in the villages about menstrual hygiene, organizing fundraisers and collection drives for NGOs, hosting speakers who have worked with such communities to address students during different events at our school etc."
